THE PATRIARCHY CHALLENGE

  • Patriarchy is a system of inequalities that creates privilege and oppression. Intersecting with class, caste, ethnicity, religion and other identities, patriarchy is embedded in all power dynamics in homes, communities, the state, and the global economic and political systems.

PROMOTE GENDER EQUALITY

To challenge the patriarchal system and create a gender equal future for Pakistan, Shirkat Gah works from the grassroots to the government and international arenas, supporting mens,women,girls,youth and transgender community to promote human rights for all.

BUILD FEMINIST MOVEMENTS

Creating momentum for a violence-free, gender equal and inclusive future, we nurture feminist thinking and leadership, multiply local, national and transnational connections and interactions, cultivate a sense of collective self and mobilize male allies so women and girls can tackle structural and systemic obstacles at all levels and in all arenas.

EMPOWER MARGINALISED VOICES

We help women and girls acquire knowledge, skills and know-how to access existing rights and services so they can be empowered self-advocates for the changes they desire to see. We create platforms for marginalized voices to be heard, opportunities to exercise agency in political and public processes and decision-making and support mobilized communities to identify obstacles and overcome these with their own ideas and strategies.

CRAFT FEMINIST POLICIES

We support Pakistan’s policy-makers to craft and effectively implement gender-responsive laws and policies by generating evidence and providing technical assistance. We promote appropriate local, provincial and national laws and policies; monitor compliance with international commitments, and contribute to setting a global feminist change agenda.

RESPOND TO DISASTERS

We strive to ensure that in disasters, such as earthquakes, floods and COVID-19, women, girls and other marginalized groups are not left behind in response and recovery measures. Informed by evidence from the field and past experiences our Strategic Relief is always carried out in collaboration with local organizations and includes food, hygiene kits and other essentials. Assistance includes medical camps, highlighting the voices and unique challenged of the marginalized so as to improve system responses

HOW WE WORK

TRAININGS

At Shirkat Gah, our training programs are designed to empower women, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and trans communities through a range of capacity-building initiatives. We conduct gender and political organizing (GPO) trainings on leadership, advocacy, CEDAW, and other key rights-based frameworks to strengthen participants’ voices in both public and private spheres. Our Feminist Leadership Institute is a program that focuses on nurturing the next generation of young women activists. Through this initiative, we provide intensive training, mentorship, and seed grants to support them in implementing transformative community projects across Pakistan.

CREATING SAFE SPACES

We run Women & Adolescent Friendly spaces in selected districts, providing a safe environment for women and girls to share experiences, acquire knowledge, skills and a mutual support group for collective strategizing with self-crafted solutions. The spaces have enabled women to claim their rights in homes, enjoy legal entitlements and benefit form services. Currently these exist in Hyderabad, Shadadkot, Quetta, Jaffarabad, Vehari, Mirpurhas, Muzzafargarh, and Swat.

INTERNATIONAL COMMITMENTS AND OBLIGATIONS

Shirkat Gah upholds Pakistan’s international commitments on gender equality and human rights by actively engaging with global frameworks such as CEDAW, the Beijing Platform for Action, ICPD, UPR, and the SDGs. With consultative status at the UN ECOSOC and as the Asia Coordination Office for Women Living Under Muslim Laws (WLUML), we contribute to feminist policy advocacy, shadow reporting, and agenda-setting across the Global South. By bridging grassroots realities with global standards, Shirkat Gah holds the state accountable and fosters inclusive, rights-based development.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Shirkat Gah has forged strong ties with and amongst marginalised communities across about two dozen districts of Pakistan to empower women and girls to be safe from violence and to exercise their rights, including sexual and reproductive rights. We listen to women’s stories and issues and build knowledge and capacity for them to exercise their own legal and agency. Safe spaces is part of community engagement.

POLICY ENGAGEMENTS

Field insights, accumulated and newly generated knowledge and analyses translate into evidence-based policy asks shared with Pakistani legislators and the Executive at the local, provincial and federal levels as well as other change makers and influencers such as civil society actor an academics to expand the voices for gender equality and justice for all. At international forums, we share progress and challenges from Pakistan and bring home new perspectives and challenges identified by others.

NURTURING FEMINIST AND LEADERSHIP ALLIES

We engage with, connect and mobilise women, youth and allies to raise empowered voices for justice and equality, and to exercise inclusive leadership for transformative change. To bridge the gap, we forge platforms for women to engage with local leaders as a way to increase their voice in communal decision-making and to create a conducive and democratic environment.
